Stuart Carey,

Originally from Newcastle Upon Tyne, Stuart lives and works in London. His creative journey began at fourteen when his art teacher, Glyn Thomas, introduced him to ceramics, sparking a deep interest in the material. This early passion led him through four years of ceramics in school, a BA at the Glasgow School of Art, and an MA at the Royal College of Art, where he studied under renowned artists like Martin Smith, Felicity Aylieff, Alison Britton and Emanuel Cooper. This decade of intensive training uniquely positioned him for a swift entry into the art world.

Stuart gained international acclaim with his elegant tableware collection launched upon graduating from the Royal College of Art, earning two Designer of the Year awards and market leading clients including, Conran, John Lewis, Calvin Klein and Gweneth Paltro’s ‘Goop’. After seven successful years, he shifted focus to education, founding the UK's first open-access ceramics studios. He now leads The Kiln Rooms in London, which he co-owns with Ben Cooper. These studios emphasise professional development and have inspired over twenty similar studios across the UK. In 2024 his contributions were recognised with an invitation to 10 Downing Street celebrating British craftsmanship.

Committed to promoting ceramics, Stuart also serves as an associate lecturer at Central Saint Martins, a senior consultant on Channel 4's "The Great Pottery Throw Down" and an on screen mentor for the BBC’s “Make It At Market”. He aims to rejuvenate interest in ceramics and ensure its future success.

Stuart's passion for sharing his craft is evident in his book "From Clay to Kiln," which demystifies ceramics for all skill levels. Although he has continued to create for specific commissions, he now returns to the forefront with "Return to Form", a new body of work that marks a significant evolution in his over twenty-year career.
