Teaching

Central Saint Martins: Ceramic Design BA

Stuart is an associate lecturer on the Central St Martins Ceramic design BA course. The course is one of few remaining purely ceramics BA courses and he prides himself on his visiting role with the students. Stuart believes that great teachers like those he has been fortunate enough to have can be the difference in enabling students to reach their potential. Working alongside tutors including Anthony Quinn, Duncan Hoosen, Emma Lacey, Ian McIntyre and Maham Anjum, Stuart finds himself in excellent company as they lead the way for the early career makers.

Visiting Lecturer

While regularly based at The Kiln Rooms, Stuart has found himself touring the UK in his passionate pursuit of ceramics education. He has delivered multiple lectures on the business practicalities of being a ceramic maker, the reality of the market place and routes to an audience. These sides of the business are often over looked, since he delivered the opening lecture for Ceramic Art London in 2017 he has been asked by many colleges including, The Royal College of Art, Brighton, Camberwell, Manchester and of course Central St Martins to speak on the subject.

Demonstration

Stuart is a passionate thrower and has over 20 years experience at the wheel and in all aspects of studio ceramics. He has honed a way of describing the steps that encourage beginners to develop their understanding of the wheel and hand positions. He delivers a thorough yet accessible series of throwing demonstrations in all levels of institutions. Over the past few years he has also been the potter of choice for many celebrity training sessions, both privately and in association with The Great Pottery Throw Down. If you would like to have Stuart come and teach you or your students he is open to do so on a daily fee. For more information please email stuart.carey@network.rca.ac.uk
